Sarah Poon

Sarah (Tippett) Poon was born in Toronto, Ontario and began studying ‘cello at the age of six. When Sarah was eight, her family moved to Vancouver, where she continued her ‘cello studies with John Doerksen. Sarah attended the University of British Columbia and earned a Bachelor of Music in Violoncello Performance under Eric Wilson. During this time, Sarah also studied instrumental conducting under Bruce Dunn.

In addition to modern string playing, Sarah also plays Baroque ‘cello and viola da gamba. Sarah can be found playing all over the Lower Mainland and on the Sunshine Coast with the Vancouver Viols (of which she is a founding member), the Grace Notes String Quartet (which she also manages), and as a continuo team with her harpsichord-playing husband, Dave.

In 2013, Sarah moved with Dave and their two small children to Gibsons, where they now live. Sarah maintains an active teaching studio on the Sunshine Coast and in Vancouver.

In love with chamber music as a whole and Baroque music in particular, Sarah is absolutely thrilled to be conducting the Coast Chamber Strings this year.
